Discussion/Analysis Prompt

Throughout the novel, important revelations unfold about different events or characters that affect how they are perceived. What are some of these revelations, and how do they change your understanding of different characters’ actions and motivations? Why do you think Picoult presents information in this manner?

Teaching Suggestion: One of the central themes of this book is Appearance Versus Reality, which can be seen in its non-linear structure. When information appears out of chronological order, it helps readers make retrospective sense of the characters’ motivations. This includes Peter’s reasons for carrying out the shooting; Josie’s reasons for not being friends with Peter; the reality of Josie’s relationship with Matt; and Peter’s relationship with his family. Consider guiding the conversation by asking how these non-linear revelations contribute to the narrative tension of the book, connect to any of the books central themes, and/or help the reader understand different characters without condemning them.
